A Pemberley Moment: A scene inspired by the book

Mrs. Bennet wakes in a state of triumph.

Lydia is married—married!—and off to Newcastle, wherever that is (northward, certainly; everything inconvenient seems to be northward), and the very fact of it feels like an accomplishment that ought to be admired by the whole county. Mrs. Bennet has, for once, the satisfaction of saying “I told you so” without anyone being able to dispute it. There were objections, there were nerves, there were dreadful moments when she was certain her poor heart would not endure, but in the end—miracle of miracles—the thing is done. Lydia is safely disposed of. Mrs. Bennet is, by her own measure, victorious.

Naturally, this happiness cannot simply remain peaceful.

No sooner has she arranged her thoughts into a pleasing picture of herself as a mother who has managed it all than fresh intelligence arrives with the force of a cannon: Mr. Bingley is coming back to Netherfield.

Coming back. To Netherfield.

Mrs. Bennet sits upright as though the bed has become suddenly too small to contain her anticipation. Her pulse rises. Her mind begins to run—fast, ungovernable, gleefully chaotic. Coming back means calling. Calling means visiting. Visiting means dinners. Dinners mean invitations. Invitations mean Jane, and Jane means Mr. Bingley, and Mr. Bingley means… everything Mrs. Bennet has ever wanted, properly achieved at last.

She can already see it. Jane, looking sweet and modest (as she always does, to everyone’s admiration). Mr. Bingley, all smiles and good humor, positively unable to help himself. A proposal, of course—what else could happen? Mrs. Bennet has no patience for halfway events. Mr. Bingley will return, he will see Jane, he will fall in love again (as if he ever truly stopped), and he will propose. It will happen quickly, because it must. It will happen publicly, because it should. Mrs. Bennet’s imagination does not waste time on small outcomes.

By the time she has even put her feet on the floor, she has begun planning the entire future.

There must be new gowns. There must be visits made in the proper order. There must be a dinner at Longbourn—no, several dinners. The sitting room must be arranged. The ribbons must be found. Lydia is already married, thank heaven, so attention may return to what matters: Jane, Netherfield, and a marriage that will finally silence the neighborhood by giving it exactly what it has been speculating about for years.

Mrs. Bennet is so full of anxious delight that she can scarcely breathe.

And yet—beneath the triumph, beneath the dizzy excitement—there is also a familiar trembling. What if something goes wrong? What if Mr. Bingley is delayed? What if Jane says something too little? What if Lizzy says something too much? What if Mr. Bennet is not appropriately impressed? What if—what if—what if—

Mrs. Bennet’s nerves, always lively, begin to flutter into something perilously close to alarm.

This is where the tea becomes essential.

Mrs. Bennet’s Calming Draught is not a luxury in this household; it is a necessity, like a sturdy door against a draft. She calls for it as one might call for reassurance itself. The warm, gentle scent rises—apple-cider sweetness with soft spice, soothing and steady, entirely unlike Mrs. Bennet’s thoughts, which are now galloping ahead at full speed. The first sip is a small miracle. It does not stop the excitement—nothing could, and frankly Mrs. Bennet would not want it stopped—but it smooths the sharp edges of her agitation, turning frantic anticipation into something more manageable: a feeling that resembles hope rather than hysteria.

She takes another sip and closes her eyes for the briefest moment, as if to steady her heart. There is warmth in her hands, warmth in her chest, and a little bit of calm working its way through her like sense by gentle persuasion. She can be happy without fainting. She can plan without dissolving into exclamations. She can, perhaps, survive the days ahead—provided everyone behaves exactly as she wishes, which is unlikely, but one must not be too particular.

Still, there is no denying it: Mr. Bingley is returning. Netherfield is stirring again. And Mrs. Bennet, cup in hand and imagination already decorating the future, sits by the window with the satisfied certainty that life is, at last, preparing to give her the one thing she has wanted almost as much as a marriage for Lydia—

A marriage for Jane.

She sips her apple-cider rooibos—comforting, caffeine-free, blessedly calming—and tries, very bravely, to think of something else.

She cannot.

But at least she has tea.
